BASICS OF DRAW/STOCK

Final Fantasy VIII does not use the magic systems of the past, i.e. the Materia or Espers. In FF VIII, you basically "learn" magic by absorbing the magic from your opponent. This part is similar to FF VII's manipulation. After choosing to draw, you can either stock the energy or use the magic right then. For example:

Rinoa: Draw: Stock - uses character (Rinoa) to draw and stock the enemy's spell. Assume that Rinoa previously had 3 Cure Spells and 5 Fire Spells, and she draws 3 Cure spells from the opponent. Now she will have 6 Cure and 5 Fire spells available.

Zell: Draw: Cast - uses character (Zell) to draw and cast the spell selected. Using the the draw/cast combination does not add any spells to the reserve. I have found that directly casting a spell is less powerful than using a stocked one.

Note that with high level enemies or bosses, a character may fail to draw any magic from the opponent. This happens less frequently as your level is increased.
